Whenever I visited my grandmother from a young age, there were two stories I always read. This was one of them. Reading this brings back so many memories. It's so well done, the description isn't over the top and yet you get such a sense of everything in it - the food they ate, what a moor is and would have smelt like, what the garden would have been like... and the characters are captured so well. You see the uncle for his gruffness, but you know he's not as terrible as the rest of the characters fear him. This is one of the few books turned into movies that they did well also (ignoring the slight changes - illness to earthquake, etc).I really like this book.
